The distinctive features of Madagascar Rose Quartz : all about the stone to gemstone

Updated: Mar 17

Fine gemstone of global appeal, Madagascar's Rose quartz is a variety of quartz prized for its delicate color and energetic properties.

Here's a comprehensive overview of this gemstone, from its extraction to its diverse applications.

Formation and characteristics of Malagasy Rose Quartz

Madagascar rose quartz is a variety sought after for its delicate shade and its applications in jewelry, decoration, and lithotherapy (crystal healing).

  • Pure Chemical Composition and fine crystalline structure

It belongs to the silicate family and is composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2). This mineral primarily develops in pegmatites (igneous rocks) and hydrothermal veins, environments conducive to the crystallization of large, high-quality crystals.

  • Crystal structure and hardness

Rose quartz is part of the macrocrystalline variety of quartz, meaning it forms visible crystals larger than the microcrystalline variety, such as chalcedony, which forms fine-grained aggregates. Rose quartz crystals can be quite large and well-formed. With a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale, it is scratch-resistant and durable. However, it can still be scratched by harder materials like corundum (ruby and sapphire) and diamond.

  • Color-type

Soft to deep pink, sometimes with milky reflections. Its coloration is due to the presence of manganese, titanium, aluminum, and phosphorus.

  • Luster and transparency

Rather transparent Some Malagasy specimens are more translucent than those from other regions, allowing for better light diffusion. Superior transparency due to the presence of metallic impurities; cloudy rose quartz results from microscopic inclusions of dumortierite: vitreous to waxy luster.

  • Phenomenon, optical effect

Asterism rare "six-rayed star" of white reflection under direct light, highly prized in gemology (rose quartz cabochons) ; soft glow fluorescence under UV light.

Malagasy rose quartz contains fewer visible impurities, giving it a more homogeneous luster. Its crystalline structure is often finer and denser, allowing it to be worked with precision for the creation of sculptures and decorative objects.

Madagascar rose quartz exhibits a more vivid and saturated pink hue than rose quartz from other origins, sometimes with deeper nuances.

Extraction of Rose quartz in Madagascar

Madagascar is one of the primary sources of gem-quality rose quartz. Extraction mainly occurs in the regions of:

  • Ihosy

  • Tolagnaro

  • Antsirabe

Anjanabonoina, Madagascar : translucent rose quartz with intense pink hues.

These regions are recognized for providing high-quality specimens, prized by collectors and jewelers worldwide.
